Milestones

I recently decided to take photography more seriously. Wanting to move well past snapshots and into the realm of professional photography. For the very first time, I’ve submitted photos for a print show. Up to six images could be submitted for a chance to be shown in the gallery. At least one person, place, and thing had to be included among the submissions. They also had to have been taken in 2013. The only editing software allowed was lightroom (no photoshop).

I ended up submitting six of my images and all six were actually selected to be shown :) Being chosen was a great feeling but the biggest sense of accomplishment I felt was actually following through, getting everything mounted successfully, and putting my images out there to be judged/viewed/felt/rejected by others.

Still learning and growing (guess that’ll never stop) but throughout the frustrations I’m enjoying the ride

Fundamentals of Photography: Fun With Long Exposures and Multi-Flash

This image was created in camera* using a long exposure (2.5 seconds), a speedlite, a dark room, and a black backdrop.

The Set Up:

Find a darkened room (don’t worry, you can set your gear up first then turn the lights off) or set up during night time outdoors. For the photo above we set up in a windowless room with a black backdrop (which really is optional). Since you’ll be using a long exposure I recommend setting up your camera on a tripod or some kind of stabilizer (table top etc).

Camera Settings:

To help minimize any ambient light set your ISO to as low as possible in your camera. Set you shutter speed to a long exposure 2 or more seconds (you can vary the shutter speed depending on your desired effect so have fun experimenting). Choose an aperture that is appropriate for your shot. Keep in mind that your aperture also will determine how much of the light from flash is allowed into your camera. So play around with your aperture and the output power of your flash until your get the exposure you want (the smaller the aperture the higher the flash output you may need).

Setting Up Your Flash:

Now the next part can be done in two different ways:

Option 1: Multi-Flash Mode

If your flash has a multi-flash mode select it. Choose your output power (1/1 = full power, 1/2 = half power, 1/8, 1/128 etc), how many times you want the flash to fire, and the time between flashes (typically measure in hz). For the set up I used 1/8 power and 3 flashes at a speed of 1hz. When using a long exposure, every time your flash fires it will capture your subject. So however many times your flash fires will be how many times your subject will appear in the picture. If your flash fires three times, your subject will appear three times in a single picture. Every time the flash fires have them move into a different position, turn their head, dance, whatever you can imagine.

(YN468 in multi mode)

Option 2: Manual Mode

Put you flash in manual mode, set the power, and select the zoom (a small zoom like 24mm will create a light the spreads wide and a long zoom like 85mm will create narrower light that reaches farther away). With this method you can then fire the flash by hand, using the test/pilot button. You can choose the number of flashes and exactly how long between flashes you want (depending on how long it takes for your flash to recharge). If you have a flash sync cable or wireless trigger you can even experiment with different positions of each flash.

I highly encourage experimenting with different settings or even using a ND filter to help reduce light for those really long exposures.

Fundamentals of Photography: Depth of Field (DOF) pt 1

“depth of field (DOF) is the distance between the nearest and farthest objects in a scene that appear acceptably sharp in an image”

Picture #1: using an aperture of f/1.8 (very wide aperture) only the figurine in front is in sharp focus

Picture #2: using an aperture of f/8 (middle of the road) the figure up front remains in focus but the mug now begins to come into focus

Picture #3: an aperture of f/22 (very small aperture)

All three shots were taken with a Canon 50mm on a Canon 60D. The point of focus is the same for all three images (the figure in the front ) but notice how more of the picture becomes in focus as the aperture becomes smaller. Keep in mind that the smaller the f stop the wider the aperture opening becomes which in turn gives you a smaller depth of field (yeah I know, sounds backwards doesn’t it). This causes less of the image to become in focus. By f/22 the majority of the photo is in focus.

Larger apertures such as f/1.4-f/5.6 are often used in portrait photography in order to bring emphasis to your subject. Small apertures like f/11 through f/22 are commonly used in landscape photography where you may want as much in focus as possible.

A couple notes of warning:

! Using an aperture opening such as f/1.4-f/2.8 for portraits can create an extremely narrow depth of field. For example, the slightest movement of your model toward or away from your camera can make the difference from both eyes being perfectly in focus to just the tip of their nose only being in focus.

! depending on your lens, the closer your aperture is to either extreme (whether large or small) can cause a loss of sharpness in image quality. Experiment with your lens to find which range of f stops give you the sharpest image.

You can use a wider aperture to blur the background (popularly know as bokeh) as seen in picture #1. This can create more dramatic photos as well as bring more emphasis to your subject. Various lenses give different types of bokeh (smoother more circular bokeh or more harsh angular pentagon blur). There are even lens aperture kits (like those from lensbaby) that allow you to shape the bokeh of your photos into hearts, stars, and many other shapes.
